Best Celtic Songs of 2025

2025 was a great year for Celtic music. From traditional Celtic music to pop and rock and everything in between, this year’s releases truly had something for everyone to enjoy. These songs were the standout songs for me from the year. This is my opinion, so it is okay if you disagree and think other songs deserve to be here. These are my favorite songs. The songs are in no particular order.

1. “Up Hope” by Deacon Blue

“Up Hope” is from Deacon Blue’s tenth studio album. This whole album is phenomenal and upbeat, but this song perfectly captures the essence of the album. It is a song of hope, unity, and bringing people together. In a world of darkness and division, this song reminds us that there is still love and light in the world that unite us.

2. “Take A Sexy Picture Of Me” by CMAT

This song is an anthem for all women who deal with so much on a regular basis. Women are expected to do so much and look good doing so. Society puts so much pressure on women to look good from an early age. This song questions the importance of that when women have so many other important things to do. The second verse of the song was a hit across social media, becoming the soundtrack to a viral dance and video trend.

3. “Hey Brother” by the Red Hot Chilli Pipers

I was lucky enough to hear this song live, even before I listened to the album. I discovered the band in September of this year and went to see them in concert. This song was an absolute standout in the concert. It was played early on in the set. I was drawn into other songs that were played prior to the song, but this song solidified my love for the band for me.

4.  "A Mother's Heart for Palestine" by Mothers Against Genocide

2025 was an amazing concert year for me. I got to see Mary Black perform with the High Kings back in March, which was a great experience. She is featured on this song, among other musicians. Not only is the song a beautiful song in its own right, but the message behind it and the awareness it is raising make it even better. The original song, “A Mother’s Heart,” is one of my favorites, but this rendition adds a new layer of meaning to it.

5. “Lovers and Friends” by Varo

This song is about the current political climate around the world. It was written by Sean Mone about politicians who only work for themselves, ignoring the needs of their constituents. The song says that our social connections will get us through. Though the song was written and released by other musicians prior to this year, Varo’s rendition is timely for all that is going on in the world currently.

"Written In Light" Concert To Benefit Those Impacted by Ukraine War

On December 12, 2025, Spiders For Ukraine will host the “Written In Light” charity concert. The night features Scottish and Ukrainian music through caroling and a concert as well as homemade Ukrainian food and crafts. This is a family-friendly event.

The event will also feature a moving play called “Life in One Suitcase.” Written by Ukrainian director Oksana Saiapina, this play tells the story of those who are displaced and the decisions they have to make in the moment. The play connects to Christmas as the events around the first Christmas were not calm and peaceful, but there was a sense of promise and hope.

Other performances in the concert include the Harmony Kids Club in Edinburgh choir, DINA and Viter Kondriyanenko, and John Morran. The evening will also include a fair featuring Ukrainian artists and food from Ukrainian volunteers. There will be a workshop on how to make a motanka, which is a Ukrainian doll.

The goal of the concert is to provide a place where Scottish and Ukrainian cultures can meet and to create a safe space to talk about the war that is still happening.  It also offers a way for attendees to see Christmas from the Ukrainian perspective and connect to both Scottish and Ukrainian culture.

This is Spiders for Ukraine’s first Christmas charity concert, but they have hosted other events in the past. This past summer, the organization hosted a Scottish–Irish–Ukrainian concert in Newhaven, which was shortlisted for this year’s Creative Edinburgh Awards in the Collaboration of the Year category.

“We are delighted to continue building connections through art and supporting those who need our help,” says Inessa Rezanova.

“Written in Light” is organized by Spiders for Ukraine. The Edinburgh-based organization hosts a wide variety of charity concerts and other arts events to raise money to support those impacted by the war in Ukraine. The funds generated by the organization's previous events have provided evacuation vehicles, ambulances, and other humanitarian aid.

Spiders For Ukraine started in 2022 as a way for those who fled to Scotland to escape the war to help those who stayed behind. Spiders for Ukraine centers opened in Edinburgh first and then expanded to Dundee, Aberdeen, and other places. A huge part of the efforts to help out is to weave camouflage nets. These nets resemble spider webs and evoke images of spiders, which is how the organization got its name.

Another project that Spiders For Ukraine has been a part of is the exhibition called “Icons on the Ammunition Boxes.” These icons were painted on ammunition boxes by Ukrainian artists Oles Klymenko and Sonya Atlantova. This exhibition has traveled the world, and the Spiders for Ukraine was the first organization to bring it to Scotland.

ManxSPCA To Host Annual Christmas Fair

ManxSPCA to host annual Christmas Fair

On December 6, 2025, ManxSPCA is hosting its ManxSPCA Christmas Fair. This year’s event will take place at The Hub in Onchan on the Isle of Mann to increase foot traffic and accessibility for attendees. The event will feature local crafters, fun holiday treats, and gifts for anyone on your list.

This year, there is a wide variety of stalls and activities for the whole family to enjoy. This includes face painting, 3D printed figures, slime from Wild Child Events, festive incense and treats from Shea Candles, crochet gifts, Knits and Pieces, and local makers.

The event began as a small fundraiser to help the animals on the Isle of Mann and has since grown into one of their key events of the season. It combines holiday shopping and a festive atmosphere with the ability to raise funds for animals in need.

This family-friendly event is free to attend. Those who go will be able to support local artisans and crafters and get the chance to meet the makers themselves. Each stall supports local crafters and the ManxSPCA.

There is a £10 stall fee for those wishing to have a stall at the event. This money goes directly to supporting the ManxSPCA’s day-to-day operations. The move to a new location allows there to be more stalls than in previous years due to added space. Not only does the event raise funds for the ManxSPCA, but it also supports local businesses and crafters.

Aside from the stall fee, participants can help raise money for ManxSPCA by visiting charity stalls at the event, entering the raffle, or making a donation. Those who wish to get involved with ManxSPCA through volunteering, becoming members, sponsoring a pen, donating items, or fundraising.

Plan.com To Host Annual Santa's On A Bike Charity Ride

On December 6, 2025, telecommunications company Plan.com is hosting Santa’s On a Bike, a festive fundraiser benefiting Rebecca’s House Children’s Hospice. This charity bike ride involves people dressing up as Santa and riding their bikes through the streets.

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with tea and coffee before the ride begins at 10. The riders will journey through the streets before finishing at Rebecca’s House Children’s Hospice. At the end of the event, there will be food and other festivities to celebrate the bike ride.

While registration is free, riders are encouraged to donate to the ride’s JustGivingpage to help the Hospice. The biggest way the event raises money is through a raffle. The prizes this year are a trip to Vegas, a trip to Iceland, and more. The raffle tickets can be bought on the day of or online. The raffle will be drawn on the day of the event. There is also merchandise available for sale, with the proceeds of the sales benefiting the hospice.

The Santa’s On A Bike event began in 2018. Since then, it has raised over £295,000 for Rebecca’s House Children’s Hospice. The idea came from someone who saw it done in the UK, so they thought it could be done to raise money in this way.

“The support we receive from riders, spectators, donors, sponsors, and the Constabulary means the world to us, and we can’t wait to bring everyone together again to spread festive cheer for a fantastic cause,” said Nicola Patterson, the event organizer and Chief People Officer at plan.com, in a press release.

Rebecca’s House Children’s Hospice is a part of Hospice Isle of Man, which was formed in 1983. Since then, the hospice has supported children who have life-limiting, life-threatening illnesses with respite, palliative, and end-of-life care.

Cailíní Lua Release Single About Irish Revolutionary Tomás Malone

On October 31, 2025, Irish band Cailíní Lua released their new single, “Brave Malone.” The single was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Wanderland Recording. Ben Wanders provided the drums for the song. The release of the single was announced in a Facebook video on October 27, 2025.

The song tells the story of Tomás Malone, who was an Irish republican and nationalist who fought in the 1916 Easter Rising, the Irish War of Independence, and the Irish Civil War. Not only was he passionate about Ireland from a political perspective, he loved all aspects of Irish culture, from music and dance to literature.

The inspiration for the song came when band member Tara Brady, who has a Master's in Public History and Cultural Heritage, was giving a lecture about Malone and his story. Someone came up to her afterwards and said she had not heard about him before, but his story needs to be shared widely.

Brady’s lecture took place on February 13, 2025, in The Roundhill Bar in County Tipperary, Ireland. It covered Malone’s life from the 1916 Rising and the years after. She is one member of Cailíní Lua, an all-women traditional Irish band.

Reflections on Kilted Owl's First Year

Today, October 27, 2025, marks the one-year anniversary of starting my Kilted Owl blog! It has been a year of trial and error and of lots of learning, both about Celtic culture and the ins and outs of running a blog. I have achieved a lot, and I have more to go. Here is an overview of what I have learned over this year and what I hope to achieve in the year ahead.

Accomplishments:

Monetized through Google AdSense

I worked hard this year to get my blog monetized. I made sure my content was up to the standards needed and remained consistent in my posting. This hard work paid off, and my blog is now monetized! I am planning on putting the money earned from my blog towards my Ireland trip that I am saving for.

3700 total views

My blog has earned almost 3700 views. I remember being excited when I hit my first 100, them 500, views. I never thought my niche blog about something I love would reach such an audience. I know part of this is due to my efforts in SEO and promoting my blogs, but also finding people who are interested in the same things I am is a huge blessing.

135 posts

This is my blog’s 135th post. I have written blogs before, but I have never been so consistent have never posted this many articles on those blogs. I am so proud of the articles I have written for this blog and all I have earned and experienced as a result. I am also proud of myself for creating a blog and sticking with it for so long. I have no plans to stop writing this blog in the near future.

New experiences

Over the course of this year, I have pushed myself to experience new things and go to different events. “For my blog” has become a motto for learning new things, going to concerts I would not have before, and branching out to events I have wanted to go to for some time. I got to experience the Rosenbach’s Burns’ Night, go to the Red Hot Chilli Pipers concert near me, and attend my first St. Patrick’s Day parade. These have become core memories for me, and I am so thankful for these experiences that I will cherish forever.

Lessons Learned:

SEO best practices

Over the course of this year, I have learned how to do SEO in a way that is effective. While I still have a lot to learn, I have come a long way and have seen my blog’s view count increase, which has been so rewarding. I aim to keep learning about SEO and to apply this knowledge to my blog to keep accomplishing my goals.

Consistency is key

I tried to write blogs in the past, but I was never interested enough to stay consistent and post regularly. This led me to stop writing on the blogs before they became successful. I am so glad I have remained consistent with Kilted Owl because it has been successful. Writing consistently also allowed me to get monetized. I published one blog every day for a couple of weeks, which led me to be monetized.

Write what you are passionate about

I have written blogs before, but I have struggled to stay consistent with them and to maintain them for as long as I have with this one. Being passionate about what you write will help you remain consistent and will help you stick with it for the long run. I have been passionate about Celtic culture for as long as I can remember, and I joined my high school’s Celtic Cultural Club. I was president my senior year! This passion and knowledge have helped me maintain my blog.

Stay curious

I have a lot of knowledge about Celtic culture from my upbringing as well as my experience in my high school’s Celtic Cultural Club. However, as I have done research for my blog as well as my library’s Celtic Cultural Club, I have learned that there are topics I do not yet know about. One of these was the Highland Clearances, which I studied for the Celtic Club and will be doing a blog post about over the coming weeks.

Do not assume things about each country in an “umbrella” culture

There are seven distinct countries that are classified as Celtic nations. “Celtic” is an umbrella term that links the countries of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Mann, Brittany, Cornwall, and Galicia (this one is debatable/controversial from what I have learned). Like other countries that tend to fall under an umbrella term (Asian, Latin, etc.), Celtic countries each have their own traditions, histories, and cultures, despite there being similarities between them. My goal has been, and continues to be, to represent each of these countries and to differentiate each country’s uniqueness in traditions.

Goals for the next year:

500 blog posts

This post is my 135th blog post. By this day next year, I hope to reach 500 blog posts. I have a lot more content to write and want to build a backlog so I do not constantly have to write new content each day. I am already building up Halloween content for October 2026 and have a list of album reviews to work on for the rest of this year.

Get my blog on Google’s search engine

Currently, my blog is not visible on Google’s search engine. It is on other search engines, but I want to get it on Google, as that is the most common search engine. I have studied SEO practices for doing so, but have struggled to accomplish this. I hope to continue learning more practices and aim to achieve this goal.

Widen my topics and coverage

I have done my best to represent each of the seven Celtic cultures fairly, but I know I have a lot of work to do in this regard. My hope is that I can learn more about each individual country and represent the lesser-known Celtic nations, such as Brittany, Cornwall, Galicia, and the Isle of Mann, more than I have this year.

My goal for the next year is to see my blog hit 10,000 total views. I am going to continue learning more about SEO best practices and will implement what I learn into my blog. I will continue doing what I am doing to promote the articles I write, and I will be consistent with posting. All of these things, from what I have learned this year, will hopefully help me achieve this goal.

Speak at Klein Camp 2025

One of my big goals, which will hopefully be accomplished over the next couple of weeks, is to speak at the Klein Camp (un)conference in November. It takes place on Temple University’s campus (my alma mater; go Owls!), and I have spoken at it before on music journalism. It was my first time ever presenting on a large scale. Now that I have some experience presenting at the Celtic Club at my library, I hope to present more confidently.

New article types

Over the next year, I hope to do more article types. I want to do Celtic subscription box unboxing, interviews, and more. I also want to go to new types of events, such as ceilidhs.  I will continue to do the article types I have already done in the past and learn new things to share on my blog moving forward.

Message to my readers and supporters

Thank you to everyone who has read and shared my posts over the past year. I have loved putting out articles for you all and hope to continue to do so for many years to come. If anyone has any suggestions for things I should cover (books, movies, musicians/albums, pubs, events, etc) or types of content you would like to see, let me know, and I will do my best to cover them. Thanks for a great year and for all of the support. Here’s to the future!
