Irish actress Brenda Fricker died on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the age of 81. Her death was confirmed by her agent, Phil Belfield. She died in Dublin after a period of illness.
Fricker was born on February 17, 1945, to Bina Murphy, a language teacher, and Desmond Frederick Fricker, a journalist for the Irish Times. Initially, she wanted to be a journalist, working as an assistant to the arts editor at the Irish Times.
She got her first acting job at 19. Fricker’s career led her to 30 roles in movies
and on television. Her most iconic roles include “My Left Foot,” a film that
tells the story of Christy Brown, and “Home Alone 2,” where she played Pigeon
Lady. Her last role was in 2024 in “The Swallow.”
Outside of acting, she wrote a memoir entitled “She Died Young: A Life In Fragments.” The memoir covers
her early years in Ireland and documents her experiences with surviving sexual
violence and living with mental illness.
Her legacy will be remembered both on and off the screen. Belfield
described Fricker as someone he was “honored to know.” She won an Oscar for her
performance in “My Left Foot,” making her the first Irish actress to win an
Oscar. The US Ambassador to Ireland released a statement, saying that she
brought Ireland’s stories to audiences in the United States through her acting.
In 2008, Fricker won the inaugural Maureen O’Hara Award from the Kerry Film Festival. This award celebrates women who have excelled in the film industry. “We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” Belfield said in a statement.
