As someone who lives in a small town in Pennsylvania, it is quite rare that anything pertaining to Celtic culture makes the front page of my local newspaper, especially outside of March and St. Patrick’s Day. However, on a Friday in late January 2026, this exact thing happened.
A young woman in a town sort of near me is going to compete
in the World Championship of Irish Step Dancing in Dublin. The article goes on
to tell how the dancer has worked her way up, as well as what she will do in
Ireland besides the competition
The article states that the championship is "known in
Celtic as the Cumann Rince Dea Mheasa." However, Celtic is not a language.
There are Celtic languages, but Celtic is not a language in and of itself.
Irish is a Celtic language. Welsh is a Celtic language. Scottish Gaelic is a
Celtic language.
The championship takes place in Ireland, so it is safe to
assume that the name of it is in Irish. Ireland has its own language, known in
Ireland as Gaeilge, pronounced "Gwail-ga". It's currently in the
process of being revived from the brink of extinction, but there are still
communities in Ireland where Irish is the primary language and is spoken
regularly.
Another thing that crossed my mind is something that I have
thought about and wondered for some time now. I would love to be able to be a “Celtic
expert” or specialist reporter for a mainstream magazine or newspaper. I am by
no means an expert on Celtic culture or history yet, but I have been studying it
for the majority of my life as a hobby, and I like to think I know a fair deal.
I know there are magazines and newspapers that focus on
Celtic culture as well, which would be a cool opportunity for me to write as
well. It would be awesome to combine what I love, writing and Celtic culture, even
beyond my blog (which I would keep doing, even if I wrote for another
publication).
If anyone knows of any publications that are up my alley,
whether they are online or in print, let me know.
