Jack-o'-lanterns have roots in Celtic traditions surrounding Samhain and Halloween. This year, I have been making as many jack-o’-lantern crafts as possible. I love how this hat turned out! I cannot wait to wear it for the rest of October!
1. Gather your materials
I opted for a black hat with orange embroidery thread to
keep with the traditional colors of the season, but you can use any color
combination you wish. You will also need an embroidery needle.
2. Outline the jack-o’-lantern’s face
Decide on the design you want and create an outline. Because
I used a black hat, I could not outline the face in pencil first. I did my best
to just use the thread as an outline. Luckily, if it did not turn out how I had
wanted, it would have been easy to redo.
3. Use thread to fill in the outline
This is the most satisfying part of the project. Seeing the
little pieces get filled in and having progress made is such a great feeling. It
feels almost like coloring a picture. It takes time, but it feels great seeing the
progress.
4. Wear the hat.
It is a relatively easy project if you are familiar with
embroidery. You can wear your hat with pride, knowing you made it yourself!
Learn from me
I wish I had an orange hat, but my local craft store did not
have orange. They only had the black hats. I love it, but I would have rather
had an orange hat and had the face be made with black thread.
