"We Were Made Prey" by Kathryn Joseph
On May 30, 2025, Scottish singer Kathryn Joseph released her
fourth album, “We Were Made Prey.” The album, which consists of 11 songs, was
recorded at Black Bay Studio on the Isle of Lewis. Joseph collaborated with
Lomond Lewis on the album. The album was released via Rock Action Records.
The vocals are a bit quiet on the first song, making it difficult to understand. It sounds like she is whispering as she is singing. While this is a cool effect, especially since the first song is called “Wolf,” I would rather hear the lyrics. This does improve over the course of the album, but there are moments where it happens again.
Unlike many albums, the song titles all relate to the title
of the album, furthering the story told by the songs within the album. Joseph
is known for the storytelling on her albums, and this shines through on this
album. Each song is its own story, like chapters within a book.
Each song of the album has a unique sound and feel, but they
resound with Joseph’s voice throughout. She uses different melodies,
instruments, and effects to create something different with each song. This
helps listeners stay interested and engaged with the album.
The songs on the album are mellow and laid back, but have a
darker tone and feel to them, even compared to Joseph’s previous work. The
album perfectly showcases her growth and maturity as a musician as well as her
journey in life. This evolution is great for fans to see, and it offers a wide
variety of music for listeners to enjoy, no matter where they “meet” Joseph and
her music.
Overall, this album is great for those wanting a more mellow
album to listen to, especially when getting work done. A couple of the songs
are labeled as explicit, so be mindful of sensitive ears who may not be fans of
explicit music. Joseph’s sound has matured and changed through the years, which
shows her growth in her career. While there are points where the vocals are a
bit hard to understand, the places where they are clear offer profound
storytelling moments.
