On March 21, 2025, Scottish pop-rock band Deacon Blue released their latest album, “The Great Western Road.” This is their tenth studio album, celebrating 40 years together as a band. The album has 12 songs, while the Tour Edition has 17 songs. This review looks at the “Tour Edition” of the album.
At the very beginning of the first song, the vibes instantly resembled Bruce Springsteen. By the second song, it resembled a disco sound. Having such a variety of sounds and vibes is a sign of talent and experience, which the band has developed over its career since forming in 1985.
Each of the songs has a different sound and style. The songs all tell a story that points to messages of hope and love towards others. In a world of darkness, this album is a bright light that radiates hope. It is about being there for each other and putting people above all else.
The album is upbeat and positive, which is needed in this world right now. While it focuses on bringing people together and acknowledges the hurt going on, it spins it in a positive way that draws us together.
The mixing on the album is done well. There is a perfect balance between the vocals and the backing instruments. Each song stays true to the band’s voice while having enough differences to keep listeners engaged and paying attention.
On a personal level, by the sixth song, I was already thinking about how I did not want the album to end. I knew that I still had 11 more songs to listen to. Before this album, I had never heard of the band, so I may have to dig back into their archives to listen to more!
Overall, this album is a great album, especially in the current world events. It provides a sense of hope, love, and belonging in a world that is constantly seeking to divide us and have us focus on only our individual selves. None of the songs are labeled as explicit, so it is great for the whole family to listen to.
