On January 24, 2025, Scottish musician C (for Chris) Duncan
released his fifth album, "It's Only A Love Song." It was released
via Bella Records, and Duncan wrote and recorded most of the album himself in
his home studio. His parents, who are retired classical musicians, contributed performances
on strings to the album.
Unlike Duncan’s previous works, this album is more ethereal,
harkening back to the sounds of the 1970s. His focus on the album was to make
an album that is very romantic, drawing on music from the 70s and even Broadway
to get his sound just right. Duncan has been wanting to make an album like this
for some time, with his previous work throwing in bits of this style.
The mixing on the album is well done for the most part, but
it would be nice if the vocals were a bit clearer. It is hard to understand the
lyrics in some parts, making it hard to stay focused on the music and the
songs.
All of the songs have a feeling of floating in space. While it
would be nice if they had a different sound to them, it fits the feeling of
walking on air when you are in love with someone. Those who are experiencing feelings
of love or even crushing on someone can relate to this album, but those who are
struggling with love may find it overly romantic.
On “Delirium,” Duncan’s voice and style almost exactly resemble
David Bowie. This is an excellent thing! There are other parts of the album
where his voice resembles Bowie, but it is most prominent on this song.
While the album is only 11 songs, it feels like it is
longer. This may be due to the fact that the songs all have a similar sound and
vibe. None of the songs in particular, making them blend together into one
continuous hodgepodge of sound.
Overall, the album is perfect for those who are feeling
particularly in love. It captures the feeling of walking on air when you are in
love. It may be wise for those who are feeling sensitive about matters of love
to steer clear, but all others will enjoy the album!
