Wind power has been on the rise around the world. Turbines harness the power of the wind and convert it into electricity to be used to power houses and buildings. This helps protect the environment. The Celtic world, Scotland in particular, has a role in wind power.

Whitelee Windfarm, which is the UK’s largest windfarm, is located in Scotland, just 20 minutes from Glasgow. It is open for the community to explore and learn about the farm, which is responsible for powering hundreds of thousands of homes in Scotland.

Whitelee Windfarm opened in 2008 and initially only had 140 turbines. Now, it uses 215 turbines to harness the wind’s power. Combined, these turbines have a generating capacity of 639 MW. This helps to power 350,000 homes.

Prior to the property being a windfarm, it was a mixture of woods and farmland with farm roads.  Now, it is a safe haven for wildlife. There are also a visitor center and trails for visitors to utilize while at the windfarm.

The windfarm is also home to the Whitelee Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). BESS has been operational since 2022 and comprises of 50MW of energy storage capacity. It uses lithium-ion battery technology, which is the same type of battery that is used in smartphones. BESS can store the energy equivalent to that needed to power nearly 4 million smartphones. It can be charged to full power in an hour.

The visitor center has a variety of learning opportunities and activities for visitors to partake in. The exhibition allows visitors to learn about the wind farm and gives them a chance to learn how to become more environmentally friendly. The café has sandwiches, paninis, soups, and more, so visitors can be refueled. There is a bus tour that takes visitors near the turbines.

Aside from the indoor activities, the windfarm has a variety of outdoor activities. It has a network of trails that totals more than 130 kilometers. The area around the windfarm is suitable for walking, running, cycling, and horse riding. There are trails of varying lengths, so people of all activity levels can find something just right for them.
