“Kerry: Tides of Time” is a two-part PBS documentary that
features the story of Kerry and the people who live there. The show is narrated
by Brendan Gleeson, who is an Irish actor known for his work in “Braveheart”
and other films.
The first episode of the show starts off with an introduction about all that Kerry offers, especially diverse environments. From rocky mountains to lakes and rivers and more, Kerry is home to a wide range of animals and wildlife.
This show is perfect for those who are interested in the
natural history of Ireland, particularly Kerry. The show talks about how the
natural landscape of Kerry has changed over the course of its history. Climates
have changed through the years, and it shows how Kerry’s environment has adapted
to these changes.
It would have been nice to know more about how the animals
have changed over time. The show discusses overall climates and environments
without really talking about the individual species that have been in Kerry. Only
wolves were mentioned briefly. The second episode does talk about the wildlife
over the course of a year, but it would have been cool to see how wildlife
changed over the course of the history of Kerry.
What was interesting was hearing a bit about how people have
come to adapt to the environmental changes that have occurred. This is
especially true for the tools and periods of migration. The movement to
villages also changed things in terms of the environments people could live in.
The impact of crop failures was also discussed. Many people wonder
why people did not just eat other crops or livestock when crop failures occurred,
especially in the Great Hunger of 1845. Rent was paid in terms of livestock and
certain crops. If these crops failed, people were left with the decision to starve
and stay in their homes or eat the livestock and risk eviction.
It would have been cool to see how the environmental changes
over the course of history impacted other aspects of culture, including music,
literature, and dance. The show focused on how living with the environmental
elements impacted lifestyles in general, but it would be interesting to dig a bit
deeper and talk about culture.
Overall, this show is perfect for those interested in the environment of Ireland, particularly in Kerry. The show talks about how the landscape has changed as the climates have changed. Its narrow focus on one place allows a deep dive into Kerry, giving more time to focus more on the changes in one place. It would be cool to see a similar look at other places in Ireland.
