Album Review: "Rathlin from a Distance/The Liquid Hour" by Yann Tiersen

Breton musician Yann Tiersen released his latest two-part album, “Rathlin from a Distance/The Liquid Hour,” via Mute on April 4, 2025.  This album is divided into two distinct parts. “Rathlin from a Distance” is eight tracks of instrumental piano. The Liquid Hour, which makes up the last five songs of the album, blends electronic music with psychedelic rhythms to create a sound that redefines the genre.

Some of the songs are the typical length of songs (between three and four minutes), but quite a few are longer, with some being more than 11 minutes long. The songs are interesting enough that the longer songs still hold the listener’s attention.

The piano portion of the album is relaxing. It is a great part to have in the background while getting work done or just relaxing around the house. Even though the music is instrumental, it still conveys a lot of emotion and takes listeners on a journey. The songs were inspired by a sailing journey Tiersen took back in 2023. Each song transports listeners to a new place while giving the illusion of being surrounded by calming water.

By contrast, the second part of the album is a call to action that focuses on capitalism, society, and taking action. This is especially relevant to today’s world of political and social turmoil all around the world. Unlike the first part of the album, where the piano is the focus, there is no one instrument in this section that has the starring role. Tiersen experiments with instruments and sounds to create something unique and special.

Overall, there is something on this album for everyone. Whether you like instrumental piano or electronic music, this music has something for you to like. The album focuses on personal and collective experiences and draws listeners together through similar journeys to unite us all in a time of divisiveness and conflict. The contrast between the two sections of the album is astounding and highlights the multitude of Tiersen’s talents, from experimenting with electronic sounds to relaxing piano. This album is an incredible journey that has the power to unite listeners and bring people together around collective experiences.
