Celtic Crafts: Recycled Shamrock Crayons

Recycled shamrock crayons

More than 12 million crayons are manufactured each day. When these crayons break, people tend to throw them away. However, they end up in landfills, and crayons take several years to biodegrade. Luckily (pun not intended), there are ways to make melted crayons. While this method works with any kind of mold or even a muffin tin, I am using a shamrock silicone mold.

1. Gather your broken crayons and remove the paper.

2. Arrange the broken crayons in the molds. Layer them to increase the thickness so they do not break easily when coloring.

3. Place the molds onto a cookie sheet. I have two shamrock molds and they both fit on one cookie sheet.

4. Set your oven to 300°F.

5. Place the crayons in the oven. Leave them in the oven until they are fully melted. This will take several minutes.

6. Remove the crayons from the oven once they are melted. Place the tray on a heat-resistant surface and let the melted crayons harden.

7. Once fully hardened, remove the crayons from the mold.

8. Use the crayons to color a picture. I opted for a festive St. Patrick’s Day picture! The crayons can be used until they break. When they break, the cycle starts all over again!
