One of the best parts of Christmas is the music. While there
are plenty of traditional songs and carols that celebrate this time of year,
there are also more modern songs that have been released that take on new
approaches to the holiday season.
“Christmas 1915” by Celtic Thunder
While this song is a more somber song, it still celebrates
the magic and power of Christmas and how the season brings us together. The
song takes place in World War I and tells the story of a ceasefire that took
place on Christmas in 1915. The war continued the day after Christmas, but for
a day, the battle that was taking place stopped so those fighting each other could
celebrate the holiday.
“Christmas in Belfast” by The Shamrocks
“Christmas in Belfast” was written by the Shamrocks’ member Nathan
Johnston and celebrates the magic of the season within the city of Belfast. The
song was released in 2025 as a single. It gives a fresh look at Irish and
Celtic Christmas music.
“Christmas the Way I Remember” by The High Kings
The High Kings’ first Christmas single features lyrics
written by Darren Holden to the tune of “Loch Lomond”/”Red is the Rose.” The
lyrics are nostalgic for the Christmases of childhood and the magic that filled
the Christmas season of our youth. Adulthood can make us forget this magic, but
this song reminds us of the true spirit of this time of year. Each of the High
Kings members gets a verse to sing.
“Nollaig na mBan” by Celtic Woman
“Nollaig na mBan” is a new song that was written for Celtic
Woman’s 2025 Christmas song. It reflects on “Women’s Christmas,” which is celebrated
each year on January 6. Women get the day to relax and men take over planning
the festivities for the day.
“Christmas Morning, Donegal” by Celtic Thunder
This song is one of the lesser-known Celtic Thunder
Christmas songs. It is a trip down memory lane and remembers a time of Christmas
in Donegal. The song captures the magic of Christmas through scene descriptions
and a boys’ choir singing a famous carol. Like “Christmas The Way I Remember,”
it reminds us of the magic of Christmas. The song features Celtic Thunder
vocalist Paul Byrom.
