"Rememberings" by Sinead O'Connor
Sinéad O'Connor released her memoir, “Rememberings,” on June
1, 2021. The book talks about how music got her through some of the darkest
periods of her life and how her career came into being.
The book talks about O’Connor’s upbringing in a
dysfunctional and abusive household. As such, this book may have triggers for
those who grew up in similar households. O’Connor goes into detail about things
she experienced, so if you are sensitive to topics of abuse, be mindful of the
topics within the book.
Some parts of the book are written in the present tense,
even when these parts are talking about the past. It then switched to the past
tense when talking about past events. This was very distracting, as it was
difficult to see the reasoning behind this.
While many people have strong opinions on O’Connor’s life
and music, this book is a great insight into her past and the things she went
through growing up. She dealt with a lot of traumatic things in her life, and
her story of becoming a successful musician is inspiring. Her love of music was
her connection to her family and her escape when things became difficult. She
used music as an outlet to express herself, whether she was writing music or
listening to artists she admired. Seeing how music impacted her life in crucial
ways is a great insight into her life.
The stories she tells are deeply impactful and emotional,
but there are times when the sentences seem to be short and abrupt, especially
in the audiobook version. Eventually, the sentences do become longer, but it
seems like this occurs when O’Connor is not discussing difficult parts of her
life. It is understandable that she might be short with these sentences and
topics; it would be impactful for the reader to have longer sentences.
The audiobook is read by O’Connor. It took a bit to get used
to O’Connor’s voice as it is monotone throughout. This could be because she is
talking about difficult memories. When she talks about fun memories, her voice
is more excited, and she even chuckles at a few of her memories.
Overall, this memoir is impactful for anyone looking for a
memoir, whether you are a fan of O’Connor or not. Those who are critical of
O’Connor’s actions may gain insight into why she did some controversial things.
Fans of the singer will gain information about her past and upbringing
that may shock them and deepen their appreciation for her and her music.
