On January 10, 2025, Scottish band GLIN released their
latest album, “Unplugged, Vol. 2.” The album features Ali Levack on whistle and
Craig Irving on guitar. It was mixed and mastered by Ross Saunders. There are
five songs on the album.
This album is a nice nod to traditional Celtic music that is
simply acoustic instruments. Electric instruments can add a nice flare to
traditional tunes, but it is nice to get back to the bare bones of the music and
traditional instruments. The songs of the album are fun to listen to. The last
song is a little bit more laid-back than the other songs, but they are all
great songs.
“Casper” on this album is the unplugged version of a
previous GLIN song. The song is a great song, no matter which version it is,
which is a true sign that GLIN is a great band. It holds to being upbeat and
fun, even without fancy instruments and technology.
The mixing on this album is well done. The instruments are
in perfect balance with each other, with neither instrument having to fight to
be heard. They are both in excellent conversation with each other, complementing
each other perfectly.
There are only five songs on this album, but I personally
wish there were more. There is “Unplugged, Vol. 1,” but having a wish for more
songs means that the album is good. That said, this album is perfect for those
who may want a quick album to listen to.
Overall, this album is a nice reminder that you do not need
all of the bells and whistles of electric instruments to have fun with great
music. This album is just guitar and a whistle. That’s all. Nothing overly
fancy was used. Celtic music, especially jigs and reels, is upbeat and fun to
dance to with or without technological instruments, so this album is a nice nod
back to the traditions.
