“The youngest thorn is the sharpest” is an Irish proverb. On a literal level, thorns are sharpest when they are younger and newer. Over time, as they age, they grow duller and lose their effect and sharpness. However, this proverb has deeper meanings as well.
Young people get a bad reputation for being inexperienced in
life. They are often seen as lazy and ignorant about the workings of the world.
However, they often have a fresh perspective on things. More and more, we are
seeing younger people become activists and advocates for a better world.
We have seen this time and time again with school shootings
in the United States. Older people in government positions are in charge of
making rules that impact the younger generations. However, they are far removed
from their own days in school. The young people are sharing their experiences
with things they are experiencing. It is important to listen to their experiences
and protect them from being harmed.
Even in workplaces, young people are seen as less
experienced, so their opinions are often ignored and glossed over. They are usually
in lower-level roles that are not taken as seriously by those in more senior
positions. However, many young people are fresh out of their schooling, typically
studying the fields they are working in. This means they have fresh
perspectives on the field, and they may know more about the newer technologies
and policies within the industry. This allows them to be knowledgeable, even
though they are younger.
Young people nowadays have the resources to learn as much as
they can. They have energy that the older generations are losing, so they are
able to do so much and stand up for their beliefs. They have a lot to learn,
but they know a lot more than older generations give them credit. Even if they
do not know something, they have the resources and the motivation to try to
learn so they can continue to grow as people.
Older generations have a lot of experience and wisdom, but they may not be as up on industry news and updates. If they team up with the younger generation and seek to work together, each generation will be able to learn so much from the other.
