Movie Review: "Sheep Detectives"

On May 8, 2026, “The Sheep Detectives” movie was released in theaters. The movie tells the tale of a herd of sheep who seek to figure out who murdered their shepherd. The movie stars Hugh Jackman as George Hardy.

For those who read “Three Bags Full,” the movie adaptation is very different. As such, reading the book before seeing the movie will not spoil the ending of the movie. That said, those who watch the movie before reading the book should be advised that the book is darker and has themes of self-harm. The book and the movie adaptation have different titles, which helps distinguish them as two separate entities.

One thing that may bother some is the anglicization of a story that initially took place in Ireland. There were names that were changed to anglicized names. For example, in the book, George’s last name is Glenn, which is an Irish surname, but in the movie, his surname is changed to Hardy, which is primarily English.

Aside from these things, the movie is genuinely funny and emotional. It begs viewers to think deeply about things in our world, from religion to personal relationships. Those who have lost loved ones will connect with the plotline in the film where loved ones die, and how the characters navigate the situation.

Because the movie is so different from the book, the ending was surprising. The sheep in the movie all think a certain character committed George’s murder, but a completely unexpected character was the culprit. In hindsight, however, it does make sense.

In the novel, George read a variety of different genres of books to the sheep. However, in the film, there was a massive focus on mystery novels. This is not a major discrepancy, as these literal physical books will play a crucial role in helping to solve the case.

The movie was meant to be more family-friendly than the book version, and it does a great job at this. However, in an attempt to be family-friendly, it felt stripped of the action and suspense that even other family-friendly mysteries are able to capture.

Overall, the movie was cute, but it lacked real substance and suspense that would have upleveled the movie. The differences between the novel and the movie are differentiated by different names, but the anglicization of the story that originally takes place in Ireland with Irish characteristics rubs the wrong way.
