The St. Kew Inn is located in St. Kew, Cornwall. The inn dates back to the 18th century, but the building itself dates back to the 1460s according to its website. Its history has led to the pub being haunted.
The earliest part of the pub, which is now the Lounge Bar,
was built for masons to stay in while they were building the church. During
this time, it is believed that the masons would have set up their own brewery,
and the current cellar beneath the Stable Bar would have been the location of
the brewery.
Some records show that the Inn was created in 1495 once the church was finished. Little is known about this time between 1495 and 1709. The inn was mentioned in the title deeds of Nicholas Moore Bart. There are mentions of the inn in the papers of Sir John Molesworth, which include a lease in 1778 to William Clode and another lease in 1779 to Abram Brown. Brown was the landlord for 36 years.
In 1841, the landlord was Samuel Terrent. William and Ann Bligh
took over the Inn by 1851. The Inn changed hands several times more throughout
the building’s history. The building has been the venue of auctions, political
meetings, wedding celebrations, and wakes.
In the 1970s, when a new water pipe was being installed in
the bar, workmen discovered the skeleton of a teenage girl. Forensic experts
say that she had been there for 100 years. However, no one could identify the
remains or explain why she was placed in the Inn.
The spirit of the skeleton, who was named “Adele,” still lingers
in the pub. She only shows up when changes are being made to the building.
Adele makes her presence known as a cold sensation as she passes people. Some
people occasionally see a full apparition of Adele, but this is not as common an
occurrence. Adele tends to have a vibe of affection instead of fear when she
appears. Today, she is considered the Inn’s oldest resident.
Today, the Inn is a popular pub that features four internal
dining areas, a log fireplace, and secluded gardens that visitors can enjoy.
Dogs are welcome in all areas of the pub.
