“My Sailor, My Love” is a movie that tells the tale of Howard, a sailor who is widowed and lives on the coast of Ireland. His daughter, Grace, hires a housekeeper, Annie, to help him with tasks around the house a couple of times a week. The movie was directed by Klaus Häröand stars James Cosmo, Catherine Walker, and Brid Brennan.
The music of the movie was composed by Michelino Bisceglia.
It is gorgeous and perfectly fits each scene, carrying the story of each scene
and conveying the emotion eloquently. The setting of the movie is absolutely stunning.
The land around Howard’s house is beautiful and is the quintessential Irish
coast.
All of the characters are so lovable and relatable, even
Grace. Each character has their own backstory and being able to get to know
their story is such a joy. They all have aspects that people can connect with.
Each character has a different perspective on what is going
on in the movie. Seeing the different perspectives is so interesting, and the
fact that the movie encompasses all of the different perspectives takes talent
on behalf of the writers.
Everyone deserves an Annie in their lives. She is such a
sweet soul who is caring and loving. She was able to get Howard out of his
shell. Watching Annie and Howard’s relationship progress was so sweet and
wholesome. Annie is able to navigate difficult situations and conversations
with such class and kindness. She is someone we should all aspire to be like.
Annie and Howard give us hope that you can find love at any
age. Their story is so sweet. They initially did not get along, but watching
their relationship develop is incredible. While we can understand Grace’s
frustration with everything, we are rooting for Annie and Howard.
The movie handles difficult topics such as grief and mental
health with delicacy. It is so important that therapy is normalized and
discussed in the movie. This helps to normalize it in everyday conversations,
like between Grace and her coworker.
While the movie has a positive feel overall, there is still
a bit of darkness and sadness lingering. This is true, even in the happy
scenes. The darkness comes mostly from Grace’s backstory and perspective. Her
past is still so upsetting for her, and she views things based on things that
have happened.
Going into the movie, I had a feeling I would be in tears by
the end, and this rang true. I had a sense of how it was going to end, but it
did not prepare me for it. The development of the story and getting to know the
characters made the movie and its ending so emotional and impactful.
Trigger warnings: death/gravestones, mental health, grief
